Roundup ruined by discovery of slaughtered pregnant cow

KAMLOOPS — Saturday was supposed to be the most exciting day of the year for local ranchers as they rounded up their cattle, but it was quickly ruined for Jason Bishop.

Bishop came across a pregnant cow, slaughtered and left to decay at the Fish Trap corrals on Westsyde Road.

“She was a two-year-old heifer, so she had a long life ahead of her,” he said. “She had been shot in the head and then basically she fell down and they butchered her where she laid. They cut the backstraps out of her, which is the tenderloins, and took both hind legs, and left the rest.”

He adds the poachers were clearly skilled.

Bishop’s ranch has 100 head of cattle, so a loss of one cow is one full percent of the herd.

He said another rancher’s cow was also shot in the head. That cow is being cared for, but it’s not clear if it will survive.

“(I’m) just angry,” Bishop said, “Just plain angry. That’s the best day of the year and it just wrecked it.”

A $25,000 reward is being offered to anyone who has information that can lead to an arrest and conviction.

“It’s happening a lot,” Bishop said. “It’s a bizarre amount, we’ve had three cows shot in the range this year. We found one dead opening day of hunting season.”

Kamloops and Barriere RCMP have collected evidence from the scene and are investigating the matter.
