GOLDEN, B.C. — BC RCMP have confirmed a Mountie has been injured in  a shooting incident at Donald, near Golden,  yesterday afternoon. In a news release, RCMP say the officer was conducting a stop near the weigh scales at Donald, northwest of Golden, in connection with a possible theft.

The suspect in the case was not complying with the officers orders, and stole a nearby vehicle.

That’s when police say the female officer was injured.

Police say the officer’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Greg Jeannotte witnessed the shooting and tells Global News the suspect was wearing a bandanna.

Jeannotte says the suspect was in a vehicle behind them during the ride stop and seemed to get increasingly nervous as police approached, that’s when he pulled out a rifle.

He claims police were using his vehicle for cover.

He says he heard two gun shots, one from the police and one from the rifle.

Jeannotte says that’s when the suspect jumped over the meridian and pointed his gun at an older couple and told them to get out of the vehicle.

He then drove off westbound on Highway 1.

RCMP are now searching for a suspect, though they wouldn’t say if there is a confirmed direction of travel for the suspect.

The highway was closed for a time while the investigation took place, but is open to single lane, alternating traffic this morning.
