Chief Gottfriedson participates in healing ceremony with Prince William

Shane Gottfriedson, the former Tk’emlups chief who now serves as BC Regional Chief for the Assembly of First Nations, participated in a ceremony of historical significance last night.

Gottfriedson attended a commemoration at Government House in Victoria in which Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, affixed a Ring of Reconciliation to the Black Rod.

The Black Rod is a ceremonial staff created to represent the influence of the British Crown in BC.

The event was meant to be an act of reconciliation between First Nations people and the Crown.

“Reconciliation is about moving forward in a positive direction,” said Gottfriedson. “We are stronger working together and we must aspire to toward hope, healing and walking together as one.”
