REVELSTOKE-  —  If you’re travelling east through the Trans Canada Highway today, give youself some extra time.

The highway will be closed near Three Valley Gap, 19 kilometers west of Revelstoke, for extended periods of time today as crews install the first of several Remote Avalanche Control systems.

Announced by the government in early August, the systems will allow operators to fire charges remotely so that avalanche control can be completed at any time, in any weather conditions. In a news release,

Transportation Minister Todd Stone says it’s important to get the technology installed before winter hits. Stone says the system will greatly reduce the duration of closures on that stretch of highway.
