KAMLOOPS — Dogs and their owners took a stroll through Pioneer Park Sunday morning in an effort to end animal cruelty.

Kamloops SPCA interim director Alyssa Kyllo said there was a better turnout than expected for this year’s Paws for a Cause event.

“It’s just amazing to see everyone with their dogs out, their families, lots of people if they don’t have dogs they’ve borrowed a dog,” she said. “We see lots of SPCA alumni, so that’s probably one of our staffs’ favourite things to see is dogs that have been adopted through our doors and now they’re coming back and we get to see them again.”

Kyllo said the Kamloops branch was aiming to raise $15,000 through the event.

“Every dollar helps,” Kyllo said. “It goes towards keeping our doors open, heating our building, feeding our animals, paying our staff, buying food, toys, bedding, things like that.”

The walk also raises money for animal rescue efforts.

Kyllo said any funds raised in addition to their $15,000 goal will help the local SPCA construct a new building.

She said the plan is to break ground late this year, or early next year.
