KAMLOOPS — The kids are heading back to school on Tuesday, so RCMP are issuing a reminder to slow down in school zones.

Drivers are required to slow down to 30 km/h when going through a school zone.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says motorists should plan out their routes if their daily commute takes them through a school zone.

“If you drive through school zones remember you’re going to need a little extra time because the school zones will be coming back into effect,” Shelkie said. “Think about where the crosswalks are in school zones and where parents and school buses are going to be dropping off and picking up their children. As well, if you’re someone who’s driving your child to school watch for the kids on the road.”

Shelkie says parents should also teach children the rules of the road, especially when riding their bikes.

If caught speeding in a school zone drivers face some hefty fines. Shelkie says the RCMP will have an increased presence in those areas as kids return for another school year.

“We always make patrols through school zones, but especially in the first month or so. All of September we’re out there enforcing and just there as a reminder. When people see the police vehicle they’re reminded, ‘ oh yeah, I need to pay extra attention,’ so for everybody’s safety just slow down, pay attention, and watch out for the little kids.”
