Two-time Stanley Cup winner Brad Richards announces retirement from NHL

Two-time Stanley Cup winner Brad Richards announced his retirement from the National Hockey League on Wednesday.

The Murray Harbour, P.E.I., native played 1,126 games with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Dallas Stars, New York Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings. Richards scored 298 goals and added 634 assists throughout his career.

Richards won a Cup with the Lightning in 2004 and also earned the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoffs MVP. He won a second Cup with Chicago in 2015, assisting on Patrick Kane’s series-clinching goal in a Game 6 win over Tampa Bay. In total, he had 105 points in 146 post-season games.

“Winning the Stanley Cups in Tampa Bay and Chicago was the best part of my career and I will never forget those moments,” Richards said in a release. “Nothing compares to enjoying that night with your team and knowing what you have accomplished together.”

Richards signed a one-year deal last summer with the Detroit Red Wings and had 10 goals and 18 assists in 68 games.

Richards won gold with Canada at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and played for the Canadians at the world junior championship and 2006 Olympics.

The 36-year-old played his junior hockey with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Rimouski Oceanic, where he won a Memorial Cup in 2000.
