Snow possible on the Coquihalla Highway

KAMLOOPS — Summer is just six days away, but there is some unwelcome words for travellers from Environment Canada Forecaster Lisa Coldwells today.

“If you are going to be traveling on the Coquihalla, or the connector [Highway 97C], or any of the mountain highways in the South-West, including the Allison Pass be expecting snow as you travel,” explained Coldwell.

Coldwells says the cold low lingering over the province right now is the type of system that results in the nickname “June-uary” often used by forecasters.

“Because it’s so cold aloft, when you get some of these thunderstorms or showers that develop, it actually does snow on the upper level highways and the mountain peaks.”

She notes the Coquihalla may see amounts as high as 10 to 15 centimetres accumulate before tomorrow morning.

But Coldwells adds as the week progresses, the system will dissipate and move on, returning BC to mainly sunny conditions.

“There is a possibility that we might see amounts as high as 10 to 15 centimetres through Wednesday morning. Of course, not all of that is going to stick, but it is certinally going to make the roads very slippery.”
