KAMLOOPS — At its regular meeting next week, Kamloops council is expected to discuss the first challenge to its new by-law barring smoking in city parks.

The city has received a formal request from the organizers of Ribfest to allow smoking within the beer garden at the August event.

City staff say this is the first of what are likely to be scores of similar requests for special events held in city parks.

Staff are proposing a pair of options: either following the existing by-law banning all smoking in parks, or allowing it in a designated area for events that have licenses to sell alcohol.
