KAMLOOPS — A BC Supreme Court judge has upheld the conviction of a man who slammed a speedboat into a houseboat on Shuswap Lake six years ago, killing the houseboat’s operator.

Leon Reinbrecht was convicted last October of criminal negligence causing death and criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

The crash in July of 2010 killed Ken Brown and injured eight others.

After his conviction last October, Reinbrecht’s lawyer Joe Doyle argued that a series of delays in the trial proceedings should lead to Justice Sheri Donegan overturning the conviction.

But in BC Supreme Court this morning, Donegan dismissed the application.

Brown’s sister Patti Oliver says the dismissal is a load off her mind.

“Total relief, my stomach was just in knots. When she said dismissed, it was perfect. Thats what it has to be, six years, it’s just too long, it needs to finish,” Brown told CFJC Today.

A sentencing hearing has been scheduled to begin next Tuesday.
