Transgender girls at B.C. legislature to back human rights code bill

VICTORIA — Two transgender girls were in the legislature when the NDP introduced a private member’s bill to include gender identity and expression in British Columbia’s Human Rights Code.

Grade 7 students Tru Wilson and Harriette Cunningham say B.C. will be a more inclusive and accepting place if transgender people’s rights were recognized with a provincial law.

The bill was introduced by New Democrat Spencer Chandra Herbert.

Wilson, who wore a pink T-shirt with the slogan “I am proud to be Trans,” says she fought for the right to wear a girl’s uniform at her Delta school when she was going through her transition.

Comox resident Cunningham says including transgender identity and expression rights in the human rights code would signal that she is fully accepted.
