Highway 97 closure this weekend in Kelowna

KELOWNA, B.C. — Part of Highway 97 in Kelowna will be closed for about 8 hours this weekend.

The Ministry of Transportation says the closure will be from Sexsmith/Old Vernon Road to Edwards Road from 9 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Sunday, to allow for utilities work as part of the six-laning that corridor.

A detour will be in pace for traffic heading north on Highway 97, which will send vehicles east on Old Vernon Road, north on Acland Road, and west on Edwards Road.

For traffic going south, they will be detoured west onto Edwards Road, south onto Adams Road and east on Sexsmith Road.

A map of the detour route can be viewed by clicking here.

In order to minimize inconvenience to motorists, the utilities work is being done during the overnight hours when traffic is lightest.

Travellers are advised to allow extra time to reach their destinations and are asked to drive with caution, follow all signs and watch for traffic control personnel.

The work is being done to expand and upgrade over four kilometres of Highway 97 from Highway 33 to Edwards Road.

“These upgrades will improve safety and efficiency for all users of the highway and better connect Kelowna’s downtown core with surrounding areas,” says a ministry media release.
