Could TRU be home to a wind turbine?

KAMLOOPS — Today is Earth Day, and another day for Thompson Rivers University Sustainability Director Jim Gudjonson who is working on making the TRU campus greener.

Gudjonson says among his projects right now is an apparatus to gather wind data, with the possibility of installing an electricity-generating wind turbine in the future.

“We wanted to look at the feasibility of putting in a wind turbine here, but before we do that we want to get a good idea of what our wind speeds, the average speed over a long period of time. So we hope to study wind speed, direction, velocity, and all of that for nine to 12 months,” said Gudjonson.

However, Gudjonson says wind turbines are still very expensive, and while there are only a few months of data to work with, it doesn’t appear a turbine will be economically viable here.
