KAMLOOPS — The RCMP helicopter had to be employed to help rescue a stranded hiker near Savona yesterday.

The 75 year old man called '911' at about 11:00 a.m., saying he had been hiking with friends in steep terrain, but had come to a point where it was impossible for him to get back up to his staging point.

Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says the man's age wasn't necessarily the main factor in him not being able to make it back to his vehicle.

"I don't want to say that because I know some very fit 75 year olds, and older people," said Shelkie. "I don't know whether it was his age or lifestyle or what it was but for whatever reason, he wasn't able to make it back. He said he just didn't have the energy to make it back up the hill."

Kamloops Rural RCMP and volunteer firefighters from Savona went to the area, but couldn't track the group down.

AIR 4 located the group and lifted the man to safety.

Shelkie says he was checked out by medical personnel, who deemed him fine physically.
