VANCOUVER — A criminal charge has been laid against a young man who Vancouver police allege was driving 250 kilometres per hour before he crashed his parents’ new Mercedes.

Const. Brian Montague said crash investigators believe the man, who was then 18 years old, was going at five times the speed limit.

“When the investigators told me how fast he was going I honestly didn’t believe it. I didn’t think anyone could actually travel that fast on that particular stretch of roadway,” Montague said.

“We don’t see these speeds in the city. We see people travelling at high rates of speeds, but 250 is nothing short of insanity.”

The crash happened on April 12, 2015, at about 3 a.m. in a tony neighbourhood near the Marine Drive Golf Club in Vancouver.

Montague said the vehicle missed a slight curve in the road, crossed the centre line and landed hidden in the shrubbery in the front yard of a home.

He said it was an hour before someone came by, noticed the debris on the road and called for help.

The investigation was helped along by information from the event data recorder and air bag control modules in the 2015 Mercedes C63 coupe, he said.

While the driver was relatively unharmed, a 17-year-old male passenger suffered extensive head and facial injuries and broken bones, Montague said

“I would imagine it was nothing more than a fluke that we didn’t pull two dead bodies out of there.”

Yue Hui Wang, who is now 19, was arrested when he arrived at Vancouver’s airport from China and has been charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

Montague said he believes the man was returning from China to take part in a ceremony for his Canadian citizenship.
