Low loonie helps local music festival

MERRITT, B.C. — The president of the Merritt Rockin’ River Fest says the country music festival has already become synonymous with Merritt, even though it’s only heading into its second year.

And Kenny Hess says the relative weakness of the Canadian dollar bodes well for the event attracting another 15- to 20-thousand festival-goers this July.

“The biggest positive of the money being where it is, is we’ve seen an influx of American people looking at the low loonie and saying, ‘let’s travel up and see what Canada has to offer,’” says Hess. “So we have seen a good influx of Americans out of Oregon and Washington, so we are pretty happy about that.”

Hess notes the low dollar bodes well for the festival continuing to be a success, noting it’s a very tough business to turn a profit.
