Kamloops Blazers win big 5-0 over the Spokane Chiefs

KAMLOOPS — The Blazers closed out the third game of their four-game homestand with a 5-0 rout against the Spokane Chiefs on Wednesday night.

Kamloops received goals from all four lines and Connor Ingram made 27 saves for his fourth shutout of the season, as the Blazers (30-25-5-4) now sit two points up on the Spokane Chiefs (29-25-5-4), moving into sole possession of seventh place in the Western Conference.

The game was scoreless until 18:01 of the first period, when Matt Needham put home a rebound on the powerplay to give the Blazers a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Jake Kryski doubled the lead 48 seconds into the second, and Matt Revel scored later in the period to put Kamloops in cruise control. Quinn Benjafield and Jermaine Loewen added third period goals to give the Blazers a comfortable cushion.

While the Blazers were outshot 27-26 in the game, the quality of scoring chances were visibly on Kamloops side.

“Nothing too crazy today. I think we gave up two odd-man rushes in the first, I took one in the face. A couple lucky bounces and we played good – played good defensively, didn’t give up much and it wasn’t too bad back there today”, Ingram said post-game.

Kamloops was 6-6 on the penalty kill and went 2-5 on the powerplay, giving them five powerplay goals in the past two games. With earning their third win in the past four outings, the Blazers are rounding out their game at the right time in the season, with eight games remaining on the regular season schedule.

“[Getting the two points tonight] does huge numbers to our confidence – the guys are going to go into next game with a sense of urgency”, Loewen said. “We have good players, we know we have good speed, we can be physical. We’re really turning our game around right now. Guys are playing better as a team, our powerplay is playing pretty good, our penalty kill was exceptional tonight. Everything was working pretty good.”

Blazers Head Coach Don Hay talked about his team’s strong performance.

“I thought we played the right way… Anytime you can get all of the lines scoring it shows a real team game. Everybody feels value for the victory tonight, from the goaltender right on out”, Hay said. “We scored a lot of different ways; on the powerplay and by guys who don’t usually score much and stepped up for us.”

The Blazers play one final home game on their current homestand on Friday night, when the Kelowna Rockets are in town on CCM Propac night. Puck drop on Friday night is at 7:00pm.
