WolfPack women volleyball swept at UBC

KAMLOOPS —The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women’s volleyball team had a rough weekend in Vancouver.

The WolfPack lost a pair of matches to the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds at the War Memorial Gym in Canada West play.

On Saturday (Feb 6), the ‘Pack fell 3-1 to the Thunderbirds. The scores were 25-23,25-20,24-26,25-23. As a result, TRU falls to the .500 mark (11-11) while UBC moves to 14-6.

“We didn’t find a good flow offensively but I liked the way we fought” said WolfPack head coach Chad Grimm. “In the third set, we battled back. We were down 24-20 and Iuliia (Pakhomenko, 4th year, outside hitter, Donetsk, Ukraine) came in to serve and we scored six straight points to win the set and force a fourth. In the fourth, we pushed. We had some things go against us, but I liked the way we battled. “
Pakhomenko had 14 kills in 45 swings with six service aces, nine digs and two block assists. Krista Hogewoning (5th year, outside hitter, Delta, BC) had 12 kills in 34 chances with an assist, seven digs and a block assist.

Robyn Froese (4th year, setter, Red Deer, AB) had 23 assists and seven digs while Katie Woo (4th year, setter, Surrey, BC) added 14 assists while Alyssa Wolf (5th year, libero, South Surrey, BC) had 10 digs.

UBC was led by Danielle Brisbois with 15 kills in 35 chances with eight digs and two block assists. Juliana Kaufmanis had 11 kills in 28 opportunities with three service aces, eight digs, a solo block and two block assists.

Alessandra Gentile had 37 assists for UBC.

The WolfPack return home for their final two matches of the Canada West regular season next weekend (Feb 12-13). They will take on the #1 team in the last CIS rankings-the Trinity Western University Spartans. The matches will be played at the TRU gym. Game time Friday will be 6 pm.
