The province has given the go-ahead for the treatment and discharge of water outside the Mount Polley mine site.

The permit is needed as water levels in Springer Pit will reach capacity next April.

That’s where the existing tailings pond is on the mine site, near Likely, BC.

The approval was granted after a 30-day public consultation period and a technical review.

In August 2014, the tailings pond at the Mount Polley mine ruptured, sending 24 billion litres of mine waste into the surrounding watershed.
